Dual wins for Callum Norton at Loretta Lynnís qualifier
KTM racer Callum Norton has relished his opportunity to race in the USA, his first international racing experience, and will return to home soil in Australia with more impressive results to add to his collection.
Norton, the youngest of the GMR Motorex KTM contingent claimed four State and an Australian Championship in 2011 and is well on his way to continue scoring impressive results in 2012.
Norton will soon return from several weeks in the USA where with the support of KTM Australia and North America where he contested the World Mini Grand Prix at Mesquite, Nevada and a Loretta Lynn’s qualifying event at Honey Lake, Milford CA.
While a troubled final day of racing hampered Norton’s impressive early form at the World Mini Grand Prix, his dual wins at the Loretta’s qualifier in both the 85cc stock and modified classes capped off an eventful and amazing experience for the 11 year old.
“I raced three classes at the World Mini’s’ said Norton ‘I was in the 85cc stock, modified and super-mini’s. We had planned to just do the stock and modified but we were able to secure a super-mini so we entered that class for extra track time.”
During the week-long event Norton’s best results were in the stock class where he placed 7th after a crash while leading and 2nd respectively in his heats and also placed an impressive 4th in his first final. Well positioned for a podium result, a troubled final race saw him score a 13th for a 10th overall in this class.
“Even though I didn’t get a podium in the stock or modified class I knew I had really good pace against the US guys. My lap times were good enough to run top three so I was happy with that. I even pulled a holeshot in the super-mini class against really tricked out bikes which was pretty cool.”
Overall for the World Mini Grand Prix, Norton claimed 10th, 17th and 18th in the 85cc stock and modified (through to 11 years), and super-mini (through to 13 years) respectively.
Team Manager Glenn Macdonald said of the results “With a crash, track bunting wrapped around his neck and bike and boiled rear brakes all in the final day of racing across his three classes Callum certainly had a rough day of racing! Despite this, there were so many positives and the learning curve was invaluable.”
The Loretta Lynn’s qualifying event at Honey Lake MX, North-West / South-West regions gave Norton his chance to shine. Up against some tough US competitors, the event wasn’t going to be easy.
“It started really well with a third in my first stock race and I was just really pumped. I think I rode better than I did at the World Mini’s and felt good on the bike in both the stock and modified classes.”
After a tough weekend of racing, Norton won both the stock and modified classes for the South-West region, placing him in 5th on the stock in the combined region point score and 3rd in the modified class.
“I am pretty happy right now. These two trophies look awesome!”
The impressive results now set Norton up for a second round of qualifying in the USA in June.
Macdonald continued “The whole Norton family did a great job over in the US and have represented not only KTM Australia and North America, but their race team and sponsors very proudly. We are all really excited by Callum’s results and look forward to seeing how he goes at the next qualifying round. With some luck we hope to see him on the line at Loretta’s for a crack at this major US event.”
