GMR Motorex KTM racers excel at grueling Hattah Desert Race

The grueling Hattah Desert Race has been run and won again on 7 & 8 July, with three GMR Motorex KTM racers standing on the podium. Over 700 entries contested the KTM Australia sponsored event making way for a lively street party and race atmosphere.

The deep red whooped sand circuit near Mildura in north-west Victoria proved challenging yet rewarding and saw young Callum Norton take the win in the 9-u12 years age group on board his KTM85SX in his first attempt at the event.

“This race was so much fun!’ he said “I can’t wait to come back and do it again next year. It was tough, but I really enjoyed it.”

Wayde Carter claimed a dominant win in the 12-u16 years age group, making the result his 4th consecutive Hattah win and an impressive comeback from injury.

“It was great to get another win this year. My bike was perfect all day and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to come back from my broken ankle. This was my first major event since my operation, and I was stoked at how well it held up. Now I am really looking forward to racing the final round of the Victorian Motocross Championships in a few weeks time.”

In previous years, senior women’s racer Kristy Gillespie has contested the pony express class but with an exclusive Women’s class on offer in 2012, Kristy tried her hand at the endurance race solo. Despite leading much of the race, a mechanical gremlin saw the lead disappear placing 2nd at the finish line.

“This was really tough! Said Gillespie “I was well positioned but unfortunately my bike played up and I just couldn’t hold onto the lead. The sand was super thick and whooped out and it certainly tested my fitness. I placed 89th outright at prologue against all the other competitors so that in itself was also a great result.”

Team Manager Glenn Macdonald commented “The team did a great job at Hattah and represented KTM extremely well. Wayde has proved he has recovered well from his ankle injury to retain his winning streak at the grueling event. Callum’s win was impressive also and we look forward to seeing him back at the event next year in the older junior category. Kristy’s bike issue was disappointing for her, but she held strong to claim 2nd place on the podium. ‘

‘Congratulations to all three of our racers, it was a grueling event and the results were impressive. ‘

‘Thank you also to the representatives of KTM Australia and the Motorex KTM Off Road Team who supported our traditional motocross racers at this amazing endurance desert race.”

Macdonald also competed at the event, placing 28th outright in prologue and while in podium contention behind enduro specialists Brad Williscroft and Craig Carmichael in the Vets Class, a high-side and knock to the head ended his race. An optimistic Macdonald said “There is always next year – I’ll be back!”
