GMR Motorex KTM racers in winning form at Wonthaggi Masters

28-02-12

GMR Motorex KTM racers have kept up their early season form with more impressive results, this time at the Wonthaggi Masters on 25 & 26 February 2012. Andy Dinicol also made a successful return to home soil after his recent stint in the US to claim two podium results.

The sandy circuit in south-east Victoria attracted a deep field of competition as the venue will host a round of the senior Australian MX Nationals and will also host support classes for juniors.

Callum Norton, the youngest of the GMR contingent, continued his winning form in the 9-u12 years 85cc class and said “I had a bit of a slow start at Wonthaggi, the last two opens I have raced were hard-pack tracks and this was really sandy. I got into a rhythm pretty quickly though and was able to get through the field and take the win in moto one. I won the next two which gave me the win overall, so I am pretty happy.”

The event was the first in 2012 for Andy Dinicol who only days earlier returned from a trip to the US for training.
“It was really great trip in the US, but I was really keen to get back home and race” said Dinicol “All of my training over there was on the KTM two-stroke, so in race one on the 250SXF I felt a bit rusty. I got a 4th in that race. Once I got a pretty convincing win in my next race on the 150SX the rest of the day fell into place. I finished with 4-1-1 in the 13-u16 years 250F which gave me 2nd overall, missing the win by just one point and in the two-strokes I won all three for the win overall.”

Kristy Gillespie also had a solid day of racing “It was another really good one for me. It’s only my second big race this season so to get another win on the board is great. I took out the win in the senior women’s, winning all three races. I also raced in the B Grade Lites against the guys and came home with a 6th in race one which I was happy with.”

“It was yet another great result for the team riders this weekend” said Team Manager Glenn Macdonald at the conclusion of the event “Callum’s good form continues in the younger 85cc class and hopefully its shaping up to be another great year for him. Kristy has also started her season well, winning the last two Open meetings against solid competition.”

Macdonald went on to add “It was great to see young Andy back on home soil and the time on the bike in the US really showed. He was simply untouchable this weekend on the 150SX. While he was a little stiff on the bigger 250SXF, bearing in mind he only started riding one just before Christmas, he did an outstanding job. After a couple of set-up tweaks he was comfortable and riding fast and came very close to taking the overall win in this class also.”
