Two podiums for GMR Motorex KTM racers at Sunshine State Series opener

21-02-12

The Shell Advance Sunshine State Series kicked off on 18 February 2012 at Kilcoy, QLD and saw both Egan Mastin and Mitchell Evans score podium results.

The wet and boggy conditions made for a tough event for Reece Rayner, Evans and Mastin but the two podiums and impressive individual race results made for a successful weekend.

The event was Reece Rayner’s first major event in the older 12-u16 years Mini Lites category, recently stepping up from the 9-u12 years 85cc small wheel.

“We had a full gate in my class and I wasn’t really sure how I would go against the older riders’ said Rayner ‘so I put a lot of time into prepping my gate and it paid off. I got a great start and ran with the top guys to place 4th in the first race. In the second race, I was running top three until I had a crash and struggled to get going again in the conditions. I had a mechanical problem in my last race so my overall wasn’t what I wanted. I know I have good pace and I need to focus on getting good starts to run up the front.”

The series opener was also Mitch Evans’ first major event in the 13-u16 years 2-stroke Lites on board his new KTM150SX machine, having just recently becoming eligible to compete in this class.

“It was bit of a tough weekend for me, it was the first time I raced my KTM150 and being in two classes in the wet conditions really tested me’ said Evans ‘Even though I didn’t have the results I wanted, I handled racing the two bikes well and my fitness helped as the day went on.’

Evan’s continued ‘In my first 85 race I got caught up in the first corner and had to fight back through the field, I got up to 5th. In the second race, I got a great start with Reece and we were up in the top group but he had a crash and I got caught up in it. In the final race I finished off well placing 2nd to give me 3rd overall for the round. The 150 was tough, I cracked the top ten in one race so I know with a bit more consistency I can get up there in the points.”

Egan Mastin also stepped out on board his new KTM250SXF at his first major event to place 2nd overall for the series opener.

“I had a really good run in the 250F class at Kilcoy’ said Mastin ‘I would have liked the win of course but to place 2nd overall in my first major event on the 250F, I am pretty happy. It was a bit tougher on the 150SX. I picked up a 3rd and two 4th places which gave me 5th overall for the round. It was a 13-u16 age group so I was racing guys a lot older than me but it was good racing.”

Upon de-brief with the riders and review of results, Team Manager Glenn Macdonald said “It was a tough event for the boys this weekend and a great result for Mitch and Egan who both made the podium. There were also some impressive individual race results for all three during the day’s racing. The wet conditions really tested all three riders, but it was still a great way to kick off the season. We have a gauge of what needs working on so the aim now is to shift a little more focus into these areas.”
