Rayner takes a clean sweep in 65cc class at Sunshine State Series finale

The final round of the Sunshine State Series was held at Kilcoy QLD on the weekend of 10 September and saw GMR Motorex KTM racer Reece Rayner put on and impressive performance to clean sweep the 65cc class.

Rayner, who led the high profile series in both the 9-u12 years 65cc and 85cc classes after round six of the series, missed round seven due to his FIM World Championship commitments. Rayner returned for the finale to claim a clean sweep in the 65cc and runner-up for the day on the 85cc and despite missing a round of the series, scored a great series overall placing second in both classes.

“I am really pumped with my results, it was a long series and I had some round wins on both bikes along the way so I am really happy’ said Rayner ‘I have some work to do on improving my starts on the 85cc, but I will be working on this in the lead up to the Aussies so I should have it sorted. I love riding at Murray Bridge where the Aussies are and am really looking forward to it.”

Mitchell Evans also missed round seven of the series due to his World Championship commitments and retained third overall heading into the finale. Unfortunately, the event didn’t go to plan with Evan’s slipping back in the overall points to finish the series in 4th place.

“Even though I missed a round I was still in with a chance to podium so to miss out was disappointing. I did get some round wins during the series which was good so I will be taking all the positives and focusing on the junior nationals in a few weeks time.”

Team Manager Glenn Macdonald said of the results “Reece continued his good form from the World Championships in Italy just a few weeks ago. He has some fine tuning to do on his starts on the 85cc but I am confident that we will be dialed for the junior nationals schedule for the first week of October.’

‘Second place overall in both classes was a great outcome for Reece, particularly given that he missed a round of the series and had a poor start to the series on the 85cc, placing 10th at round one. It was a great come back in the 85cc class and a determined effort. Reece stood on the podium on 13 occasions across both his classes in the seven rounds he contested, claiming seven round wins along the way. Congratulations to Reece, his family and supporters on a great result.’

Macdonald went on to add “Mitch didn’t have the outcome he had hoped for at Kilcoy which meant he missed a podium for the series. It was a little disappointing for him considering that until Kilcoy, he had stood on the podium at every round of the series he contested, including two round wins. A little bad luck swung his way at Kilcoy and he missed an overall podium by the slightest of margins. We are very proud of Mitch’s results so far this season it’s been a huge year and a big commitment to contest such a lengthy series from their home base in Cairns, so well done guys!’

'Scott Mann has missed the majority of the Sunshine State Series due to injury, but returned for a hit-out in the lead up to the Australian Junior Nationals. Scott competed in round one of racing at Kilcoy after twisting his ankle, opting to sit out the remainder of the day to ensure he is in top shape for the nationals.

“Scott has missed most of this series due to injury and went to Kilcoy purely for some bike time’ said Macdonald ‘Scott is finding new speed every time he is on the bike and sometimes with this comes crashes, which was the case at Kilcoy. We are confident Scott will be dialed and focused for the nationals.”
