Kristy Gillespie places second at Australian Womenís Motocross Championship and marks her sixth consecutive National podium

27-08-11

GMR Motorex KTM racer Kristy Gillespie has claimed yet another podium position at the 2011 Australian Women’s Motocross Championship, held at Coolum QLD on 27 August, placing second overall and marks her sixth consecutive National podium. The great result wasn’t without excitement with Gillespie lucky to finish the final moto.

Persistent rain in the lead up to the event soaked the Coolum circuit resulting in a boggy, sandy circuit that proved challenging for many.

The event hosted three traditional motos of 15 minutes plus one lap, with the final race of the day a back-to-back battle of two 15 minute motos with a 5 minute break between.

Gillespie claimed 2-2-2-2-3 results to secure second overall to Meghan Rutledge, with Jess Moore in third.

“Today was so technical and you really had to stay focused but there were times where you just didn't have much choice but to hold on and hope for the best’ said Gillespie ‘I had good vision in all moto's but once we got further into the race the lapped riders made it tough and of the 33 rider field we were lapping up to sixth. While the number one spot is where you want to be, I made it to the end in these tough conditions and second is an awesome result.’

A relieved Gillespie continued ‘We nearly didn’t make it in the last moto, my bike was over-heating because of blocked radiators so it got a bit stressful when my pit crew told me to slow down and save the bike! Third in that moto was simply to preserve the overall which was the main goal. This is my sixth year on the podium at the Nationals so I am happy to be standing on the box again. I really want to thank all of my family and sponsors who have helped to make this result possible.”

Team Manager Glenn Macdonald was extremely proud of Kristy’s efforts at the event and said “Second overall in the Championship is a great result for Kristy and one that is well deserved. Kristy has stood on the podium at the National Championship for five years now, this result making it her sixth consecutive podium which included two wins in 2008 and 2010. The whole team at GMR Motorex KTM is very proud of her efforts.’

Macdonald continued “The competition was always going to be tough, particularly with the likes of Rutledge, Knight, Dare, Moore and Murphy who are all capable of winning motos. The conditions were also tough for the women today. Coolum is challenging in good weather let alone with the amount of rain they received in the lead up and during race day. Some bikes were bogged to the side-plates so momentum was the key and Kristy certainly proved she could bring home great results on her KTM250SXF in trying conditions.”

Not only was the competition and conditions tough, the race program was intense.

“The format of the day also gave testament to Kristy’s ability,’ added Macdonald ‘with three traditional motos and a back-to-back showdown for the finale, each 15 minutes in duration, Kristy’s fitness was excellent and combined with her skill she was able to move through the field after some less than perfect starts.’

‘Everyone at GMR Motorex KTM Racing Team and our sponsors are really proud of Kristy’s achievement. Congratulations go out to Kristy and to her family and supporters who helped her achieve this great result.”
