Kristy Gillespie places second at QLD Womenís Motocross Championship

GMR Motorex KTM racer Kristy Gillespie contested the Queensland Women’s Motocross Championship on 2 & 3 April at Coolum QLD, taking home second place for the title. The venue will play host to the second and final round of this year’s Women’s Nationals, so the event made for great preparations for the bigger events to come.

The track was smooth, semi-loam to hard pack surface with very little in the way of technical challenges.
“Heading up to the QLD Women’s title at Coolum was really good preparation for our Nationals. We have two rounds this year, with the final at Coolum’ said Gillespie “I took the win in race one from Courtney Knight so I was really keen to keep up the momentum but my starts were really letting me down this weekend. Starts were critical because the track was so smooth.”

“I placed second in race two and three, with the third race held late on Saturday and nearly in the dark! It was a really hard race with many of us struggling with vision, so my only focus was to stay upright and bring home some points.”

“I picked up another second to Courtney on the Sunday morning and finally in the last race of the event I got a great start but crashed, again finishing fourth.”

“The 1-2-2-2-4 results gave me second overall for the Queensland Championship.”

“My starts are something I will improve on as well as racing smooth, fast tracks. I love the technical tracks and that’s my strength, but the track this weekend was super smooth and it may be the same for the Nationals so I need to be prepared.”

Team Manager Glenn Macdonald said “Kristy has put in yet another good performance at a State Championship level. As much as a win is nice, Kristy has stood on the podium yet again after putting in a solid effort, this time as runner-up in the QLD Women’s Championship and we are very proud of her.”

“We have a couple of things to work on, but have isolated our focus and are determined to have the bugs ironed out come the Nationals. Our goal is to see the reigning Women’s National Champion make it two in a row.”
