GMR Motorex KTM racers in title chase despite a tough opening round of QLD Motocross Championships

Round one of the QLD Motocross Championships kick off at the Mareeba circuit near Cairns on 3 & 4 April 2010, with GMR Motorex KTM racers Rayner and Mann in the titles chase.

Despite the far north Queensland location, the technical, sandy loam circuit boasted nearly fully grids in both junior and senior classes.

“For round one of the QLD Motocross Champs I placed 4-5-3 on the 65 and 2-9-4 on the 85 which gave me 4th overall in both classes,” said Rayner.

“I was happy with my speed at the event, and I set the fastest time on the KTM 65 SX in moto two, but the track was very technical and rough, and small mistakes stopped me from being on the podium in both classes.

“Round two is at Dysart next weekend so I plan to focus on bettering my results there.”

Scott Mann saw highs and lows at the event and said “My weekend started well and I was the fastest qualifier on the 85. I picked up a 5-1-5 results for 3rd overall on the day. I am a bit disappointed but I know I can turn this around as I am only six points off the leader.

“On the 150, it was a tough racing.  I picked up 3-8-DNF for equal 8th in the Championship.  I was really happy with my 3rd place in race one behind Jackson Richardson, and Jacob Wright where I had the pace to run with them.

“In race two I was hit by another rider while in 2nd place. I crashed and had work my way back up as far as I could with only two laps to go to pick up 8th. Then in the final race, I DNF’d after I crashed big-time off a kicker on a jump. I really knocked myself around and couldn’t finish the race.

“I am looking forward to Dysart next weekend where I hope to be on the podium in both classes.”

Team manager Glenn Macdonald attended the event and said “Both Reece and Scott did a great job this weekend, and have both put in a solid start to their respective Championship classes. They’re only a few points shy of being podium contenders for the Championship which is a good starting block.

“Both racers showed exceptional speed and I am proud of their results.  I witnessed some great racing in Mareeba this weekend, as well as some unusually aggressive junior racing.

“Looking ahead for the next round we have some homework to do to get on the podium and I believe both boys are very capable.”
