Gillespie places second at opening round of the Australian Womenís MX Championship

Reigning Australian Women’s Motocross Champion Kristy Gillespie kicked off her 2009 Nationals campaign in style at round one of the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship held at Lakes, NSW on 27 July 09.

The event was run in conjunction with the Pro Lite and Opens MX Nationals series at Lakes, on a circuit described as hard pack and hilly, which became slippery when it rained during the day. The women’s class contested three 10 minute motos during the day which made for tight racing with Gillespie taking 1-2-2 race results.

“In race one I was in third place, and Emma Davis slipped through, I managed to make the pass back and focused on Nicole Davis and Tori Dare in front on me,” said Gillespie. “I quickly made my way past Nicole and got on the back wheel of Dare, and then took the lead with one lap to go.  I rode home for the win with a five second gap back to Dare, despite the rain, and the slippery track.
“In race two I got another solid start, I knuckled down and got past Nicole Davis, and set out after Dare, but she had made bit of a break.  I reeled her in with three laps to go, and we battled it out to the end, but she managed to hold on for the win which meant we went into the final race on equal points.
“I got the holeshot in the final race, but a small mistake cost me allowing Tori Dare and Emma Davis to get through. I regrouped quickly, passed Emma and worked on tracking down Tori, but there was just simply not enough time.  I finished second, just a second off Tori Dare, which means she heads into the finals at Coolum with a three point margin over me for the Championship.  I love the Coolum track so my aim is to turn the tables around, and retain the number one plate for GMR Motorex KTM Racing.”
Team Manager Glenn Macdonald is confident that Gillespie can be on top of the podium at the next round of racing. “Kristy rode well today to secure second overall in the Championship chase,” said Macdonald. “There are a few things we know we need to work on, and I am sure we can make amends at Coolum.  Kristy loves the Coolum circuit, and we are going there determined to retain the number one plate.
“Kristy has gone undefeated all season until the Nationals, and we knew that there would be some fresh faces challenging her at the front of the pack at the Nationals.  It is always harder wearing the number one plate, and defending your title, but Kristy has a great attitude, and is going to go down to the wire at Coolum where we wrap up the series.”
1. Tori Dare 72 pts
2. Kristy Gillespie 69 pts
