Wilson & GMR Motorex KTM win QLD State Mini Lites Championship

06-07-09

GMR Motorex KTM racers Jay Wilson and Sam Duncanson both put in outstanding performances at the final round of the Queensland Motocross Championships held at Tivoli on 4 & 5 July 09, with Wilson walking away with a Mini Lites Championship.

Jay Wilson collected three convincing wins in the Mini Lites on his KTM 85SX to win the round and overall Championship in the 14-15 years age group on the fast, hard pack circuit at Tivoli.

Wilson also put in a solid performance in the 13-14 years Lites, collecting 2-2-2 race results to secure 2nd overall for the round, and second in the Championship to HRA racer, Jacob Wright.

“I am so pumped to have won the 85 title this year for GMR Motorex KTM,” said Wilson. “My KTM 85SX has been perfect, and the whole team plus all of our sponsors have really made it awesome.

“I really want to thank my mum, dad and my brother Dylan and sister Charlie, for all their support as well.

“When my team manager Glenn Macdonald walked over after the final race, and gave me a number one plate from the team, I was stunned.  I can’t wait to hang it on the wall at home.”

Wilson’s GMR Motorex KTM teammate Sam Duncanson competed in his first major event for the season after a string of recent injury. The event was Duncanson’s debut in the senior ranks, entered as an Intermediate in the Senior Lites and Open classes

“I am pumped to be back out racing again,” said Duncanson.  “The aim was just to be consistent, and link all my training together in race conditions, so I was really happy with how I went.

“I got a really bad start in my opening Lites moto, but worked my way through the pack, and got up to 7th by the chequered flag.  In race two, I finished fourth behind Kirk Gibbs, Dean Ferris, and Brendan Harrison, which was I was happy with, but I decided to sit out race three, as I wasn’t as race fit as I would like to be, and racing two classes wore me down a little.

“In the Open’s I had a ball racing the KTM 450SX-F.  I scored a 2nd in moto one behind Andrew McFarlane, and backed it up with a 3rd in moto two behind McFarlane and Robbie Marshall. “In race three I finished 3rd again which gave me a 2nd overall for the event.

“At this stage my next major race will be the u19’s Championship round at Coolum in about four weeks time, so by then I hope to be at full race fitness and am looking forward to mixing it with them.”

“I am absolutely stoked for Jay Wilson, and the results that he achieved in his state Championships,” said Team Manager Glenn Macdonald.  “Jay got off to a bumpy start to the series with a tough round at Townsville, but he has certainly kept focused and consistent which is one of the keys to succeeding in a championship.

“Jay has been an amazing ambassador for the KTM brand, and the team’s associated sponsors both on and off the track this season, and this title is well deserved.

“I have been working with riders for many years now and I continue to be overwhelmed by the joy on the faces of the rider, and family when you can hand them their number one plate at the end of the series – it’s priceless.

“GMR Motorex KTM and all of our valuable sponsors extend our congratulations to Jay and his family on their success.

“Huge congratulations should go out to our GMR Motorex KTM rookie Sam Duncanson, who did an outstanding job in his debut senior event.  Sam took to the KTM 450SX-F like a duck to water, and put in some really solid lap times against seasoned Open class racers.

“Sam also put in some awesome laps in the Lites class, which is a great indicator of things to come from him.  We’re extremely proud to have Sam back on the bike and riding with his team, and extend our congratulations to Sam, his family and support crew who have all rallied together to support his return to racing.”
