Dylan Long podiums in two classes and maintains his Vic Championship lead

Dylan Long put in a huge performance on 20 & 21 June 09 at round two of the Victorian Junior MX Championships held at Cobram in northern Victoria, taking a class win and a runner up to maintain his Championship lead in both classes.

The track was in awesome condition with a mix of sandy-loam sections and hard pack, with both technical and high speed sections providing plenty of variety for the riders.

Long claimed three race wins in 12-u16 years 85cc-150F class to secure a convincing round win and has now cemented his lead in the Championship heading into the final round to be held at Rosebud in a few weeks time.

"I had a really good round of racing on my KTM 85 SX this at Cobram," said Long. "I got the holeshot in race one, and lead to the chequers. In race two and three, even though I was in about third heading into the whoops section out of turn two, I quickly reeled in the front guys and took the lead to take the wins.”

Despite a controversial finish to race three in 13-u16 years 125-150cc class, Long placed second overall for the round.

"In the 125-150cc class I rode the KTM 150 SX and the power of the bike is just awesome” explained Long. I have been working on my starts, and it paid off - in race one I took the holeshot and lead to the end. In race two, I got a great jump off the gate, but I got shunted on the start straight which set me back a bit. I had to work pretty hard through the field, and I got up to second just behind Kale Makeham.

"About mid way through race three my muffler broke off over the whoops section while I was in the lead, and I got a black flag waived at me.

"I pulled in because the official was waiving at me, but then my Team Manager suggested I get back out on the track and finish the race. I went nuts, and charged past as many riders as I could and I finished the race in 12th.

"The 1-2-12 results gave me second overall for the round, and I am still leading the Championship so I am stoked."

Team Manager Glenn Macdonald said "Dylan rode exceptionally well in both classes this weekend, and really proved that he is one of the riders to beat right now.

"Dylan’s form, in particular in the technical whoops section was to be admired, and certainly drew the crowd to the fence line. He was amazing to watch.

"Race three on the 150 was really unfortunate. Dylan came into the round at Cobram with an 11 point gap on the field, and the disqualification due to the muffler breakage was devastating.

"As the Team Manager however, there was a number of technicalities that stood in our favour, so I made the decision to lodge a protest and encouraged Dylan to complete the race.

"My protest was upheld against the process of disqualification, and other supporting factors, and a fair result was reached.

"Dylan’s points were reinstated for his 12th place position in the final race which has now given Dylan a five point advantage heading into the final round of the Championship in this class."
