GMR Motorex KTM improve series standings at Rising Star Rookies

The Newry circuit in south east Gippsland was well prepared in the lead up to round two of the Rising Star Rookies on 25 May where four of the junior GMR Motorex KTM riders hit the track in support classes for the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship. It was a perfect day for racing and the boys performed well, as did GMR Motorex KTM rider Kristy Gillespie who is now placed 2nd overall and in the running for the Women’s Championship.

Joben Baldwin showed blistering form in the 12-14 years 85cc class with a 2nd place finish in the first 85cc moto behind Dylan Long. A heavy crash in the 125 class sidelined Joben for the rest of the day however the first moto result alone significantly improved Joben’s series standings from 5th to 3rd overall and is now only 4 points from the lead.

12-14 years 85cc Series Points
1st Errol Willis 60 pts
2nd Hayden Melross 60 pts

Dylan Berwick contested both the 13-14 years 125cc and 250F classes. Dylan entered the second round of racing at Newry in equal 3rd on the 125 and equal 4th on the 250.

After some blinding holeshots in both classes, Dylan rode with consistency and picked up 3-3 finishes in the 125 category which secured a 2nd place overall for the round behind Shaun Redhead.

Also contesting the younger 125 and 250 classes was Sam Duncanson who was competing in only his second race back since injury. The aim was to simply get out on the track, go with the flow and get some more racing under his belt. Sam finished 5th an 6th in the 13-14 years 250 class and two top 10 finishes in the super fast 125 class. Sam struggled with extreme lower arm and hand soreness and showed real determination to finish each moto.

Jason Reed led both 15 year old Rookie motos from the drop of the gate but he began to struggle in both motos toward the 12 minute mark with severe arm pump. Harrison Wooding (Bendigo Yamaha) and Dylan Peterson (Stroke Honda) capitalised on this in the first moto relegating Jason to 3rd, but in the second moto Jason managed to hold onto 2nd position by the slimmest of margins to Harrison Wooding with Dylan Peterson hot on his tail. The 3-2 secured a 3rd overall on the day.

Rookies Round Points
1st Harrison Wooding    47 pts
2nd Dylan Peterson    45 pts
3rd Jason Reed        42 pts

Rookies Series Points
1st Dylan Peterson    89 pts
2nd Jason Reed    82 pts
3rd Christopher Gay    62 pts

Team Manager Glenn Macdonald reflected on the day “On top of Kristy’s incredible results, we also have Jason Reed and Dylan Berwick who are both consistently running in the top three which places us well heading into the final round of the 15 year old Rookies and the younger 125 and 250F classes.

Sam Duncanson showed flashes of what is to come once he has the necessary bike time to be at full race fitness but it was a disappointing outcome for young Joben Baldwin who finished the day on the sidelines but his KTM 85cc was absolutely flying and he was riding exceptionally well. On a positive note, his 2nd place in the first moto has moved him up the series point score and he is now 3rd overall for the series and only 4 points off the lead.

All round, GMR Motorex KTM is really coming to the forefront and we are definitely looking forward to the final round at Lakes on 21 June were we are in the running for a podium result in all classes we are contesting.”

GMR Motorex KTM riders Joben Baldwin and Dylan Berwick will next compete at the second round of the Victorian Titles on 31 May and 1 June, while Jason will contest an AMCROSS at Young in NSW. Jesse Dobson and Sam Duncanson are pencilled in for the Sunshine State Series at Kilcoy in QLD.
