Gillespie in good form for Womenís Motocross Championship

If race preparation is anything to go by Kristy Gillespie will be the favourite Aussie rider entering the Australian Women’s Motocross Championship at Tivoli Raceway, near Brisbane this Sunday March 9.

Riding the KTM 250 SX-F under the banner of GMR Motorex KTM Racing, Gillespie has won every state based event she has entered this year, including the Murray Bridge Stadium X in January, the Maffra-Sale Open in February and over the weekend the Murray River Masters.
Gillespie who holds the current title of Victorian Women’s Motocross Champion, has placed third in the National Women’s Motocross Championship for the past three years.

Reigning Australian Champion and World Motocross Champion is Katherine Prumm from New Zealand who will be Gillespie’s toughest competition as she returns this year to challenge the Aussies.

“Katherine holds the number one plate so she is the benchmark for all competitors,” said Gillespie. “Katherine is renowned to get out early and lead the race with little competition but I’m feeling confident with my race preparation that my speed and fitness has dramatically improved, so without speculating I hope to be up there with her.

“There have been some fast Australian riders coming up through the ranks as well, who will definitely be up for the challenge in this year’s Championship, including Ashley Baits, and Adelia Barton. Then there is also some decent talent stepping out of the junior ranks.

“The race format will be two x 15 minute motos which is pretty short but I’m not complaining it’s just great that women’s racing has been recognised enough to have a National Championship.
“I have never raced at Tivoli but I have heard it is similar to Maffra in VIC, I just hope its dry and not raining, although most of the races I have competed in of late have been wet anyway, so I should be prepared either way.”

The Australian Women’s Motocross Championship will also run alongside the guys Junior Rookies Championship.

Racing starts at 9am on Sunday March 9 and spectator entry is free. Tivoli Raceway is located just of the Mt Crosby exit on the Warrego Highway.
